A late amendment to a Missouri House redistricting plan to put more of Sikeston, Missouri, in the district of State Rep. Dennis Ziegenhorn has resulted in State Reps. Ollie Amick and Gene Copeland being placed in the same district; prior to yesterday's meeting, it looked as if Ziegenhorn of Sikeston and Amick of Scott City would end up sharing a district.

Students resume classes at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau and in the Jackson School District; administrators at both say the new school year starts smoothly.

1966

ORAN, Mo. -- Rainfall of nearly five inches fell here Saturday afternoon, with the flood damaging a few buildings and streets. The rain came in less than two hours and was divided into two downpours. In the south end of the town, near the Coleman cotton gin, men paddled a boat in the street when the water was at its worst.

The Cape Girardeau County Court awards contracts for installation of an elevator in the county courthouse in Jackson. Successful bidders are Otis Elevator Co., St. Louis, $14,729; Rickard Construction Co., Cape Girardeau, general work, $3,491; and Jackson Electric Co., Jackson, electrical work, $583.40.

1941

A new provision in the wildfowl laws for 1941 sets the aggregate bag limit for geese in Alexander County, Illinois, to three per week per person. Horseshoe Lake in Alexander County annually draws upward of 50,000 Canada geese to the area, as well as thousands of hunters who feed the local economy. The season will open Oct. 16 and extend to Dec. 15.

The peach harvest is nearing a close, but the demand is holding on, and orchardists are having no trouble disposing of the fruit. One estimate is the local district peach crop will amount to about 16,000 bushels.

1916

The Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday accepted the work done by W.W. Taylor & Sons, contractors, on the Lincoln School building, which was damaged badly by fire last spring, ordering the company paid in full.

The first stretch of concrete road to be built in the county will be put in on Hopper Road, a few miles west of Cape Girardeau and a mile from the Jackson Road. The stretch will be only 400 feet long and will run through a low place in the road alongside Cape LaCroix Creek. Eris Weiss, Tom Joyce, William Ingram and other farmers living on Hopper Road and using it daily have agreed to furnish the gravel and the labor if the special road district supplies the cement.
