A St. Louis fugitive armed with a revolver robs a Savings of America Bank in Cape Girardeau of an undisclosed amount of money and then fatally shoots himself in Jefferson County following a chase on Interstate 55.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The apparent end of an effort to construct a 7,700-acre recreational lake in Cape Girardeau and Bollinger counties has prompted the Perry County Commission to dust off a 25-year-old study for possible construction of a lake in that county. The commission will appoint a seven-member committee to study the prospects of constructing a recreational lake.

Ozark Airlines has dropped its night "turn-around" flight from Cape Girardeau to St. Louis this week because of the nationwide airline strike, which is now in its 39th day; cancellation of the flight is on a week-to-week basis.

The Cape Girardeau County Court directs Prosecuting Attorney Bill D. Burlison to close all county liquor establishments whose owners haven't purchased a county license; the licenses were due July 1.

1941

What to do with a child held temporarily in custody is one of the problems facing Elizabeth Tuttle, county child welfare consultant. In her opinion, no child should be put in jail, but at present there seems no other place for a youngster while he awaits disposition of his case. To meet such emergencies, Tuttle believes there are people in the county who would open their homes to such children.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Hinkle Statler names the five members of the Cape Girardeau Housing Authority, which is directed to proceed by city ordinance with procuring better housing facilities for those in the lower-income group; named to the committee are Walter Oberheide, Edward L. Markham, Howard H. Flentge, True Taylor and Gladys Williams.

Claudine Morris, with her mother and two younger brothers, has returned to this city from Los Angeles, where the family resided the last two years. Since leaving here, Miss Claudia has become a motion-picture actress of no mean ability. While she is yet but a child, she has played important rolls in many of the Selig and Corbin-Dill companies. One of her best pictures was the "Casey Jones" series of photo-plays by the Mabiu Co.

F.W. Beckman, for the past two months cashier of the Wells-Fargo express office in Cape Girardeau, leaves for Blytheville, Arkansas, to do relief work there for several weeks.
