Filing is open for candidates to fill a vacancy on the Cape Girardeau City Council created by the official resignation yesterday of J. Ronald Fischer; Fischer, who was recently appointed Cape Girardeau County associate judge of the 2nd District, was sworn into that office in the morning by County Clerk Rusby C. Crites.

A sustained period of torrid temperatures was broken Sunday with the arrival of cool air from the north; the sweltering weather, which saw readings well into the 90s on most days in recent weeks, turned to blanket and long-sleeve weather; yesterday's high was only 77; the temperature at 11 this morning was 72.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Mr. and Mrs. Ila F. McClure of Chaffee have been advised by the War Department their son, Lt. Willie D. "Bill" McClure, 25, an Army Air Forces pilot, lost his life in the Southwest Pacific theater of war July 26; born and reared at Puxico, Missouri, McClure attended State College at Cape Girardeau two years and got his first flight training at the Consolidated Field on Highway 74.

The largest number of poliomyelitis cases in the nation's history probably will be reported this year, according to public health workers in Washington, but at present there are no active cases in Cape Girardeau County; Missouri is one of those states that have the fewest number of infantile paralysis cases.

1918

With the exception of one small building, an entire business block in Sikeston, Missouri, was destroyed by fire early in the morning; the following buildings, all the property of Christ Beck of Cairo, Illinois, are destroyed Andrew's butcher shop, Dairy Lunch Room, two-story brick occupied by two billiard halls and frame building covered with galvanized iron.

The ice shortage in Cape Girardeau continues during this hot spell, with many homes being unable to get ice; the Blue Ribbon Co. is handicapped in getting a sufficient supply from the manufacturer to meet demand; although the supply was very short all day Saturday and many homes did without, the saloons were abundantly supplied.
