Floodwater from the Mississippi River causes the congregation of Red Star Baptist Church to move worship services to 2912 Bloomfield Road, the former West Park Baptist Church; the Rev. Mike Perry, interim pastor, says the congregation will likely continue meeting there through August.

STE. GENEVIEVE, Mo. -- Residents here clear out under an emergency evacuation order, after the Valle Spring levee, an interior levee that protects this historic town from sudden rises in the Valle Spring Branch, breaches around 1:30 p.m.; the creek runs parallel to the Mississippi River in the town's southern section; the breach happens at the spot where National Guardsmen are working on a 4-inch sandboil.

Juvenile Authorities in Cape Girardeau say they won't be able to have organization of the "Royal Oak Project" completed this week as had been anticipated, but indicate the plan should be ready some time this fall; the plan proposed is for responsible Cape Girardeau citizens to take over duties of juvenile probation officers in an effort to give each juvenile more supervisory time.

The Southeast Missourian initiates use of its new 48-page Inland Medallion press, which prompted a re-design of the newspaper's front page.

1943

The Rev. C.L. Stanley, former rector of Christ Episcopal Church and present rector of St. Peter's Church in St. Louis, visits his old charge here, preaching and conducting the morning service.

The Rev. C.E. Fleshman has resigned as pastor of the Church of the Nazarene here and has accepted the pastorate of the South Side Church of the Nazarene in St. Louis; he holds his final services here today; no successor has been called by the Cape Girardeau congregation.

1918

Since St. Louis has resolved to not have the Veiled Prophet's Carnival and New Orleans has eliminated the Mardi Gras celebration during the war, Jackson has followed suit, suspending the annual Homecomers reunion; the town will put on a harvest festival, however, with the Jackson Home Guard Company as sponsor; the festival will be held Aug. 5 to 10 on the campus of the high school.

W.J. Seagraves, former deputy sheriff of Cape Girardeau County and a member of the old city council that was supplanted by the commission form of government last April, has been appointed chief of police to succeed Arthur S. Whitener, who resigned.
