The space shuttle flight of astronaut Linda Godwin, a native of Oak Ridge, has been delayed for a third time and isn't likely to fly before March; the launch of the shuttle Atlantis was originally scheduled for April.

The search continues for a new director of the University Museum on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University; the museum in Memorial Hall has been without a director since June, when James Parker retired.

1965

The congregation of the First Assembly of God moves into its new church at the corner of Hopper and Mount Auburn roads; the church was started in 1918 and has been located on South Sprigg Street since the early 1920s; pastor of the church is the Rev. George W. Westlake Jr.

Norman Dockins of Cape Girardeau, former State College fullback, was one of three rookies cut from the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League, according to the Associated Press; Dockins led the Indians in rushing last year and received All-American honorable mention.

1940

The Cape Girardeau City Council approves the appointment of Patrolman Edward W. Barenkamp as chief of police, succeeding Edgar W. Hirsch; Hirsch and Patrolman Leo B. Hill have been appointed sergeants; Vincent Unnerstall, an extra patrolman, and William Wickham, a new member of the force, have been appointed as patrolmen.

Although it may not be lasting, Cape Girardeau got some relief from the intense heat wave last night following showers; the temperature dropped to 70 degrees, after having reached a top of 96 degrees; rains today are followed by cooling winds in some areas of the region.

1915

Celebrating the opening of Centenary Methodist Church, the congregation hears Bishop J.H. McCoy of Birmingham, Alabama, in the morning.

E.M. Carter completed his work with the Normal School yesterday and left that night to join his family at the home of his parents in Boone County; Carter will have his office in Columbia, Missouri, for now; W.L. Barrett will succeed Carter as field agent for the Normal.
