Daniel L. Overbey, who has had a varied career in promoting economic development, marketing and finance, has been named executive director of the Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority.
The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau is expected to crest late this afternoon at almost 4 feet above flood stage; but the National Weather Service says if predicted rains occur north of here this week, it could cause the river to rise even higher, or delay the crest.
Cape Girardeau National Guardsmen remain on alert status as a precautionary move because of outbreaks of riots in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Thursday night; in addition, local guardsmen also conducted riot training exercises at the Malden (Missouri) Air Base.
Tentative plans for Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport terminal expansion are forwarded to the City Council by the Airport Board; the board also accepts a proposal by Wimpy's Skyway Restaurant to vacate by May 1.
The Cape Girardeau Board of Education has given its approval to the establishment of a vegetable garden to provide food for the public school cafeterias next winter; Superintendent L.J. Schultz was authorized to start the garden, with some of the 14 lots the school district owns on South West End Boulevard to be used.
Winding up their 1943 spring training program with a morning workout at Fairground Park, the St. Louis Browns load into a bus shortly after noon and head to St. Louis for a day of rest before tangling Saturday with the world champion St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park, the first game of a seven-game city series.
Judge David P. Dyer convenes the April term of federal court in the morning; in addressing grand jurors, Dyer instructs them to give special attention to those who fail to register or attempt to evade military service; he also instructs them to consider those who, "by word or deed, attempt to defeat or delay the government in its work of carrying on the war."
The golden jubilee of St. Mary's Catholic Church is celebrated in the evening, the preacher at the event being the Rev. P. Tallon of St. Louis, who as a young priest was present at the laying of the church cornerstone in 1868.
