A scale model of a 17,200-square-foot building for the Salvation Army is unveiled at the organization's annual dinner meeting; the one-story structure will be built at the same location as the current building, on the southwest corner of Sprigg and Good Hope streets.

On a vote of 5-2, the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Advisory Board refuses to endorse a proposal to paint a 320-foot-long, 14-foot-tall mural on the downtown floodwall. Some board members feel the proposal, sponsored by the River Heritage Mural Association, should have been brought before the park board before it was finalized.

1966

Sixteen diamond rings, valued at between $2,400 and $2,800, were taken from Pind's Jewelry Store, 1 N. Spanish St., yesterday. Lester E. Pind, owner of the store, said a display tray of 16 white gold dinner rings with diamond settings was missing when he closed his store in the evening.

Jackson school superintendent R.O. Hawkins reported last night to the board a preliminary estimate of cost for the proposed elementary school expansion would come to $260,000. The proposed addition would be made to the present elementary school and auditorium and would include a cafeteria, gymnasium, five additional classrooms and space for other school programs.

1941

First Lt. Seth McKee, who is in the Army Air Corps, stationed at the Orlando Air Base in Florida, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.F. McKee of Illmo, and his sisters, Arneita and Willie Dee McKee of Cape Girardeau.

Four more cases of measles are reported in the Cape Girardeau Public Schools by school nurse Myrtle Schrader. There are now 34 cases in the schools: 22 at Lorimier, 10 at Franklin and two at Washington.

1916

At a meeting of the executive committee and the committee named to select a man for the place, F.J. Martin of Oran, Missouri, is employed as secretary of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club. He will take up his duties Monday morning.

The new Cape Girardeau fair will be held during the week of Sept. 6 to 9, if the program as arranged at a circuit meeting Friday in Kennett, Missouri, is carried out. The other Missouri towns in the circuit are Campbell, Sikeston, Caruthersville, Kennett and Poplar Bluff; Piggott and Paragould, Arkansas, also are part of the circuit.
