CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Circuit Judge Anthony J. Heckemeyer has ordered a special election May 14 to determine who will hold the Ward 2 Chaffee City Council seat. In the April election, Janet Sullivan beat Ward 2 incumbent Ed Gauthier by 14 votes; however, election judges erred by handing out Ward 2 ballots to an estimated 18 Ward 1 voters.
MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Shirley Illers Cooper, the mayor of Marble Hill, has been selected as one of six Jefferson Award winners by WPSD-TV of Paducah, Kentucky. The award recognizes outstanding community service.
An extensive remodeling and redecorating program, providing more than double the previous space, has been completed in The Missourian's newsroom. The expansion was made possible by the construction of a second-floor addition two years ago into which the composing room was moved. A wall between the newsroom and the abandoned composing room was removed, and the newsroom has occupied both sections; in addition, a library has been established to house photographs, clippings and reference material.
Eugene Seabaugh, owner of Seabaugh Christmas Tree Farm, has finished planting 15,000 more trees on the farm near Oak Ridge.
Pupils of 65 high schools throng Cape Girardeau for the final day of the annual Southeast Missouri High School meet. The day's contests, covering all phases of literary activity and athletics, follow on the heels of a big program of agricultural contests that started yesterday and extend into today's program.
Burgess S. Buckner, 84, engineer of the first train to enter Cape Girardeau, died yesterday at a local hospital. When Louis Houck constructed the first railroad into town in January 1881, Buckner, then 25, was the engineer of the train. He worked on the Houck road a number of years and then became an engineer for Frisco.
After six ballots were taken last night, the Cape Girardeau City Council finally appointed B.F. Prescott caretaker of the fairgrounds park. He will take up his duties May 1. He will have police powers on the grounds and will also look after the upkeep of the park. His salary will be $50 per month in the summer and $40 per month in the winter.
Councilman Arthur Bowman has brought a proposition to the Cape Girardeau City Council for adding several subdivisions to the city. Those that may be taken in are the Roberson-Gale or Red Star Addition, Marble City Heights Addition, Monticello Addition and Smelterville.
