A bill establishing a new emergency board to resolve the remaining disputes and impose a settlement in 65 days was approved under special parliamentary procedures without dissent by the Senate after passing the House 400-5.

The First National Bank of Sikeston, Missouri, has purchased the former Colonial Federal Savings and Loan Building at 2027 Broadway here. First National also has filed an application for a full-service banking operation at the Cape Girardeau location.

1966

Members of the Cape Girardeau County Court discuss the new juvenile detention home with county juvenile officer Robert S. Burdine and juvenile judge W. Osler Statler. Burdine reports juvenile offices have been moved to the detention home at 37 S. Frederick St. in Cape Girardeau, and the home now is in operation.

A new trailer for a tractor-trailer unit, valued at $10,000, which had been sent to Harris Truck and Tailer Sails on Highway 61 North for alterations, is reported missing to police. Apparently, someone with a tractor unit hitched it to the trailer parked on a lot at Highway 61 and Bessie and drove away. The trailer is owned by Cauble and Field Fruits and Vegetables of Cape Girardeau.

1941

COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Dr. A.C. Magill of the State Teachers College at Cape Girardeau is elected president of the Missouri Academy of Science here.

Boys from 21 high schools are in Cape Girardeau to compete in the various agriculture contests being held as part of the second and final section of the annual Southeast Missouri District High School meet. The day is given over entirely to agriculture, with the exception of tennis singles held on the Cheney Hall courts at the Teachers College.

1916

The special election to decide a $15,000 bond issue with which to buy a modern fire-fighting apparatus fails by a mere three votes, 308 for the issue and 158 against; a two-thirds majority was needed to pass the issue.

Cape Girardeau Mayor Fred A. Kage has been made president of the new fair association. The honor was nearly, but not quite, bestowed on Judge Edward D. Hays, A.M. Tinsley and Will Bergmann, but they would have no part in it. Bergmann was selected vice president, Albert Lilly secretary and S.M. Carter treasurer.
