Cape Girardeau County elected officials voted to increase their salaries by 10 percent when their new terms start during Monday's meeting of the County Pay Commission; county officials haven't had pay raises since 1987.
A new multi-purpose recreation facility at the corner of Kingshighway and Mount Auburn Road might include a facility for the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; the city's Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has approved a motion to study the feasibility of including a 10,000-square-foot Chamber office with the 32-square-foot multi-purpose facility.
Thirty-one police department employees voted unanimously yesterday to accept the city of Cape Girardeau's proposal for a $75 per month pay increase, but with the understanding they could withdraw resignations and not have to ask for reinstatement; the offer was in response to an April 1 police ultimatum.
Cape Girardeau and Jackson funeral homes all publish advertisements in the Southeast Missourian announcing they will no longer be providing ambulance service after this week; the funeral homes are Sparks, Lorberg, Walther's, Ford and Sons, Steinhagen-Haman and Brinkopf Howell in Cape Girardeau and McCombs, Deneke-Laird and Cracraft-Miller in Jackson.
Cape Girardeau swings into the Second War Loan campaign with more than 300 workers, armed with cards of prospective buyers, moving into the drive for a quick cleanup of this important, home front battle; $99,186 in bonds were sold yesterday, the first day of the campaign, at distribution centers in Cape Girardeau; of the $641,000 quota assigned the Cape Girardeau County, the city's goal is $401,000, Jackson's is $75,000, and the county outside the two towns is $165,000.
Cape Girardeau County closes its Red Cross War Fund drive by reporting $22,065.87 received and on actual deposit in the bank; this is an over-subscription of the county's $20,000 quota of $2,065.87.
Superintendent D.E. Smith of the International Shoe factory has added another important feature for the benefit of his 800-plus workers; a cafeteria has been installed and has been pronounced a great success.
At last sidewalks are to be built on Broadway west of Pacific Street; a contractor starts work on a stretch of walk from a point a short distance west of Pacific to Henderson Avenue, a distance of two blocks; this walk is on the north side of the street, serving the many nice homes that have been built within the past few years.
