50 years ago: Sept. 9, 1960

State College enrollment moves well past the predicted figure to an all-time high of 2,550 students; president Mark F. Scully predicts late arrivals through the middle of next week will push the figure to around 2,600 students.

Dewey Keller, cashier of the Bank of Gordonville, says it will be some time before any move can be made from Gordonville to Cape Girardeau; the State Banking Board this week approved transfer of the charter of the Bank of Gordonville to Cape Girardeau and change of its name to the Cape State Bank.

75 years ago: Sept. 9, 1935

An army of children march back to Cape Girardeau's schools as the new term opens; preliminary enrollment figures show 2,842 enrolled, just eight short of last year's first-day number.

100 years ago: Sept. 9, 1910

A big crowd and satisfactory prices ruled at the big lot sale in the far northwest end of Cape Girardeau yesterday, when the Monticello Land Co. placed on the market about 35 choice building lots; the place is known as Normal Heights and is just a stone's throw from the Normal School.

J.B. Legg, the noted architect who drew the plans for many Cape Girardeau buildings, is near death in California; Legg was responsible for the architectural beauty of Academic Hall and also designed The Republican building.
