Apple Creek Presbyterian Memorial Association holds its annual vesper service, with a basket dinner served on the grounds after the service; the church was founded in 1821 and is one of the oldest Presbyterian churches west of the Mississippi River.

Ground was broken Wednesday for the first of the buildings to be located in Cape Girardeau Autopark, a 10-acre tract in the 600 block of South Kingshighway; the first building will house a Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Dodge Truck facility and will involve a relocation of Town & Country Motors.

50 years ago: Sept. 8, 1960

A combined method of financing, using both general obligation bonds and revenue bonds based on water consumption, will likely be used to finance the projected Cape Girardeau sewage disposal system; Mayor Walter H. Ford and city attorney Raymond H. Vogel announce this plan after conferring with attorneys in St. Louis.

The largest budget request in State College history -- $4,055,748 for the biennium 1961-1963 -- was approved by the board of regents yesterday.

75 years ago: Sept. 8, 1935

Members of Christ Evangelical Church join with members of St. John's Evangelical Church in their annual mission festival; speakers are the Rev. Ira D. Crewdson, pastor of First Christian Church in Cape Girardeau, and the Rev. Paul Piepenbrok, pastor of the Evangelical Church at Jackson.

C.P. Harris of Cape Girardeau was elected by the State College Board of Regents to coach basketball at the school; Coach E.R. Stuber will now devote all his time to football and track.

100 years ago: Sept. 8, 1910

The public schools of Cape Girardeau are in full swing; attendance shows an increase over last year, especially in the high school; the high school departments have been removed from the Broadway School to the Lorimier School, which building has been remodeled to accommodate the change.

August Huter, one of the instructors in the manual training school of the Normal School, has severed his connection with the institution and will leave tomorrow for Santa Monica, Calif., where he will teach.
