Wal-Mart Discount Cities, headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., reports bids on a new retail store building to be erected in Cape Girardeau will be received Sept. 26; the building site is northeast of West Park Mall, on the east side of Silver Springs Road.
During a program of extensive remodeling, Port Cape Girardeau, 19 N. Water St., will be closed from Monday through Sept. 16.
Workers are repairing a bridge on the county road between Kelso and Commerce, Mo., which was damaged yesterday afternoon when the back wheels of a flat-bed truck, loaded with gravel, fell through the bridge flooring; it was driven by Henry Reinagel, who escaped injury.
State College first-semester enrollment at the noon hour reaches 861 students and continues to move rapidly upward as the second group of students goes through the registration process in the afternoon; school authorities expect a record-breaking 2,300 students on the campus.

Despite the rainy weather, public schools in Cape Girardeau are well attended: Lorimier -- 116 girls, 105 boys; Jefferson -- 132 girls, 106 boys; West Broadway (including high school) -- 161 girls, 122 boys, and Lincoln -- 53 girls, 47 boys.
