25 years ago: Sept. 8, 1984

Wal-Mart Discount Cities, headquartered in Bentonville, Ark., reports bids on a new retail store building to be erected in Cape Girardeau will be received Sept. 26; the building site is northeast of West Park Mall, on the east side of Silver Springs Road.

During a program of extensive remodeling, Port Cape Girardeau, 19 N. Water St., will be closed from Monday through Sept. 16.

50 years ago: Sept. 8, 1959

Workers are repairing a bridge on the county road between Kelso and Commerce, Mo., which was damaged yesterday afternoon when the back wheels of a flat-bed truck, loaded with gravel, fell through the bridge flooring; it was driven by Henry Reinagel, who escaped injury.

State College first-semester enrollment at the noon hour reaches 861 students and continues to move rapidly upward as the second group of students goes through the registration process in the afternoon; school authorities expect a record-breaking 2,300 students on the campus.

75 years ago: Sept. 8, 1934

F.W.H. Siemers is still pretty nimble, despite his 79 years; recently, when the chimney of his two-story home at 117 N. Frederick St., got a bit shaky, he ascended a ladder and re-pointed the bricks.

Missouri's Golden Troopers, at a special meeting at Legion hall, vote unanimously to represent the state at the national convention of the American Legion at Miami the last week in October and compete for the national championship of the Legion's drum and bugle corps.

100 years ago: Sept. 8, 1909

Three resolutions were passed Monday night by the City Council authorizing the paving of Broadway from the levee to Middle Street; Broadway should be paved yet this fall.

Despite the rainy weather, public schools in Cape Girardeau are well attended: Lorimier -- 116 girls, 105 boys; Jefferson -- 132 girls, 106 boys; West Broadway (including high school) -- 161 girls, 122 boys, and Lincoln -- 53 girls, 47 boys.
