New round of state budget cuts, totaling nearly $71.4 million, will force Southeast Missouri State University to chop another $942,325 from already scaled-back budget; including this last round, Southeast has experienced $2.83 million in budget cuts for 1992 fiscal year, largest budget reductions in school's history.

Jonesboro, Ill. - Thirteen protesters are arrested west of Jonesboro after stopping six East Perry Lumber Co. trucks carrying logs from Shawnee National Forest; two protesters chain themselves to frames of two of lumber company trucks; it takes authorities nearly three hours to cut them loose.

25 years ago: Sept. 7, 1976

Cape Girardeau's Public Library board again delays decision on whether to take option or buy property it is considering as site for new library; appointment last week of two new board members, Larry Foote and Richard Hammond, is reason given for delay; two ask for more time to consider issue, given importance of decision.

Commissioners of Southeast Missouri Regional Port Authority Commission meets to discuss which firms will be asked to make verbal presentations on doing feasibility study for docking facilities along Mississippi River at Monday's meeting; firms which will appear are Allen and Hoshal, Inc., of Memphis; Gulf South Research Institute, Inc., of Baton Rouge, La.; R.W. Booker and Associates, Inc., and Real Estate Research Corp. St. Louis, a joint venture; Sverdrup and Parcel Associates, Inc., of St. Louis, and Delta Engineering Consultants, Inc., of Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: Sept. 7, 1951

A $14,000 repair program on runway and taxi-strips at Municipal Airport, made possible by federal flood relief allotment, is nearing completion; authorities believe that airline service by Ozark Airlines will be resumed some time next week; holes in runway and taxi-strip are being patched and 300-foot section in northeast end is being completely redone.

Literally acres of canvas have sprung up at Arena Park past two days, augmenting permanent buildings for display space at opening Monday of what is shaping up to be largest of all Southeast Missouri District Fairs.

75 years ago: Sept. 7, 1926

Passing $200,000 mark, campaign to invest $300,000 locally in Cape Girardeau traffic bridge continues with committees driving hard to reach quota before end of campaign Friday; meeting at Hotel Idan-Ha at noon, special city teams announce $32,000 invested by Cape Girardeans since Monday at noon; W.J. Kies, who is directing drive in Jackson, announces $1,500 from that town, with "more around the corner".

City Council has refused to issue license to Willard Austin to operate soft drink stand at corner of Sprigg and Hickory streets; it will be recalled that it was suit over operation of barbecue stand at that point that led to successful injunction suit brought by late Robert J. Deevers against Brown & Daume, operators of place.- Sharon K. Sanders
