25 years ago: Sept. 6, 1985

Guest speaker for the Chamber of Commerce First Friday Coffee is Linda Cochran, director of the International Business Institute; the institute is sponsored by Southeast Missouri State University.

Southeast Missouri State University's Spirit Board has decided to retire the school's "generic Indian" symbol this season, making way for authentically-clad Chief Sagamore and Princess Otahki; in addition, the university will introduce a whimsical, entertaining mascot to be known as Big Red.

50 years ago: Sept. 6, 1960

It's back to school for most of Cape Girardeau's young people, and by noon 4,029 pupils have answered the call of the bell for classes in public schools; this is an increase of 176 over the first day of school last year, equivalent of about six extra classrooms of children spread out over the system.

More freshmen are on State College campus than were enrolled during the entire first semester a year ago, and the final number still hasn't been reached; 1,105 freshmen have taken the tests administered all incoming students; the total freshmen enrollment last year was 991.

75 years ago: Sept. 6, 1935

Plans for the construction of an annex to the Cape Girardeau electric plant of the Missouri Utilities Co., at a cost of $50,000, to double the capacity of the plant's present boiler, are announced by the company vice president, H.B. Newman.

The secretary of state has signed the charter of the George Kimbel Truck Lines, with a capital of $2,000 and headquarters in Cape Girardeau; the stock is held by George Kimbel, H.M. Day and F.M. Sanderson.

100 years ago: Sept. 6, 1910

Following a largely-attended meeting of the Cape Girardeau City Council, a six-point counter franchise proposition has been offered to the Frisco Railroad for its consideration; those points deal with coal rates, shipping rates, improvements to the riverfront, train service, the railroad shops, switching charges and the passenger station.

Celia Campbell, for a number of years the head of the department of music in the Normal School, leaves for Evanston, Ill., to become supervisor of music in the public schools.
