25 years ago: Sept. 6, 1984

The Women's Center and Safe House of Cape Girardeau has succeeded in a petition drive aimed at placing a measure before voters in November to increase marriage license and divorce decree fees; revenue from the increases would be used to provide additional funding for the center.

Dedication for the recently completed 4-H clubs' shelter at Arena Park will be held Sunday afternoon, with State Rep. Mary C. Kasten as the guest speaker.

50 years ago: Sept. 6, 1959

Young patients at the polio center at Saint Francis Hospital are paid a call by three actors from the "Gunsmoke" television series; making the side trip from their appearances at the Jaycee Rodeo in Sikeston, Mo., are Amanda Blake, who plays "Kitty;" Dennis Weaver, the likable "Chester," and Milburn Stone, "Doc."

Now serving as pastor of the Faith Baptist Temple, 2530 Marsha Kay Drive, is the Rev. Clyde Lee, formerly of Piasa, Ill.

75 years ago: Sept. 6, 1934

Officials connected with the state relief organization say the plant will run on a 24-hour basis and will be the largest in Missouri; about 150 head of cattle will be slaughtered daily; a former laundry building on West End Boulevard is being fitted out for the canning work.

Forced to turn back because of a low-flying ceiling near Ste. Genevieve, Mo., mail pilot E.L. Hoganson brings his 14 pouches of airmail back here, landing at the Cape Girardeau flying field; he dispatches the mail on a Frisco night train going north.

100 years ago: Sept. 6, 1909

Labor Day.

Tenny & Neff of Wayne County, Ill., are running a merry-go-round in Haarig and are conducting the business in a nice manner.

Four new members of the Normal School faculty will begin with the fall term: Henry F. Schulte, director of physical training; Mrs. Bessie Parker Hunt, teacher of public speaking and physical training of women; Rachel E. Gregg, critic teacher in the primary grades, and Arthur C. Magill, chemistry teacher.
