Dr. Don Hartman assumes his duties as the new pastor of St. John's United Church of Christ on Jackson Route 1 and St. James United Church of Christ on Jackson Route 2; his wife is the former Sue Kuehle of Cape Girardeau.

50 years ago: Sept. 5, 1957

Cape Girardeau has all but exhausted sources of revenue from which it must provide the services the public demands, and Mayor Walter H. Ford warns that the city cannot continue to "depend solely on an increase in assessed valuation every year"; one of the most restraining laws facing Cape Girardeau is the $1 maximum the city can levy per $100 assessed valuation for general purposes.

A shed in which lumber will be stored, made of steel and with a projecting canopy to protect the material from the weather, is being built at the rear of the Cape Lumber Co. on Kingsway Drive; Fred W. Kurre Jr. recently acquired the firm from Hilda Boren.

75 years ago: Sept. 5, 1932

Labor Day is observed in Cape Girardeau with a partial suspension of business; no general public celebration is held in connection with the holiday.

Word has been received by relatives and former employers in Cape Girardeau that Eva M. Dohogne is located in Chicago, being employed by a dentist there; she resigned as chief cook at Albert Hall, Teachers College dormitory, where her five years of service won high praise.

100 years ago: Sept. 5, 1907

Emma Madden returned last night from Chicago, where she went to secure the exclusive agency here for the D.B. Fisk hat; in the future, the Madden sisters will be the importers of Fisk hats in Cape Girardeau; they already handle the exclusive sale of the famous Gold Medal brand of hats.

"The Model Restaurant" is the name of the dining place on upper Broadway, the name of the restaurant at 510 Broadway having been changed when George Baysinger of Farmington, Mo., took charge of it.
