An 8:30 a.m. worship service has been added to the schedule of services at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Cape Rock Drive and Perryville Road; George B. Jewell is pastor of Westminster.
Eight burglaries were reported in Cape Girardeau County on Friday, including a break-in at Oak Ridge High School and burglaries at four cabins at Lake Girardeau; in the case of the high school burglary, entry was forcibly gained into the principal's office, with checks and change being stolen.
50 years ago: Sept. 4, 1958
Burglars gained little although they did considerable damage to the safe and other machines during a break-in at the Rueseler Motor Co., 221 N. Fountain St.; the thieves obtained a small amount of cash from vending machines; they were unsuccessful in their attempt to open the safe and a cigarette machine.
Postal authorities in Cape Girardeau say that elimination of the two night Frisco passenger trains, each of which carried mail to and from the city, will cause a considerable readjustment of service.
75 years ago: Sept. 4, 1933
Labor Day. Attracting a large attendance through the afternoon and evening, the community picnic at Fairground Park is a general success, raising approximately $500 for charity; the program features a baby show, swimming contests and other performances.
Expecting there won't be many more warm days before autumn, City Commissioner Louis Wittmor has the swimming pool at Fairground Park closed in the evening.
100 years ago: Sept. 4, 1908
Members of the Methodist Church of Cape Girardeau have vacated the Common Pleas Courthouse after using that edifice for their services for a year or more; they are now busy putting the new church on North Ellis Street into condition for holding regular services there Sunday.
A representative of the firm of contractors who built the county courthouse at Jackson appeared at the new building yesterday morning and with a man or two began tearing off the marble wainscoting; they will reinstall it as the county court decided it should be installed; the court refused to give the contractor $114 due him until the matter was properly attended to.
