The environmental research vessel Beluga arrived in Cape Girardeau late yesterday afternoon on its journey down the Mississippi River; the 37-year-old, 77-foot, converted fireboat is owned by Greenpeace International; it is on a six-month expedition on the Great Lakes and Mississippi River to call attention to the quality of the water in the river.

Dr. Harold D. Ridings' retirement brings with it the conclusion of yet another episode in the lengthy history of the Medical Arts Building; only Ridings remains out of the original five physicians who renovated the former school building in 1954.

1963

BENTON, Mo. -- Scott County's University Extension Center celebrated its 50th birthday yesterday afternoon, with many familiar faces from the past taking part in the proceedings; County Agent Tom B. Stroup reports about 100 people turned out for the party.

The improvement of Bertling Street from Sprigg Street to Bend Road with a 30-foot concrete pavement is substantially complete, and the street is expected to open to traffic by mid-week; the Cape Girardeau City Council approves the final cost estimate at $56,196.

1938

Wayne Goddard, former Teachers College Indian tackle who is an assistant to Coach Abe Stuber, was in St. Louis last week conferring with officials of the St. Louis Gunners professional football club relative to playing with them this season; but he came away without signing a contract.

Brick work has been virtually completed on the first five floors of the addition at Saint Francis Hospital, and the terra cotta coping will be added as soon as a shipment is received; construction of the brick walls for the sixth and seventh floor elevations will then begin.

1913

While sleeping in a stall at the fair grounds next to those occupied by string of fine show horses, which the owner entered at the fair two weeks ago, the horses' caretaker was attacked by a swarm of rodents Sunday night; he was badly bitten, but a doctor who treated him says he should recover.

F.C. Logan, a well-known hotel man of Blytheville, Ark., has leased the Terminal Hotel for three years; he will be assisted by his wife and their two children.
