Vice President George Bush comes to Cape Girardeau on behalf of U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson's re-election campaign, but Emerson isn't here to meet him; the congressman is in Washington, where Congress continues in session; Bush goes immediately to the home of Dr. and Mrs. Charles McGinty for a special reception for Emerson contributors.

Saying it will pay off in better government, the Cape Girardeau County Court yesterday approved pay raises for themselves and six other elected county officials.

50 years ago: Sept. 30, 1957

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Gov. James T. Blair asks for a special session of the Missouri General Assembly to help get the state's $75 million building bond program off the ground; he urges lawmakers to remove the legal barrier which has prevented sale of $55 million worth of the bonds.

The State College Indians conclude the final of four nonconference football games Saturday, when they take on the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys of Russelville; last Saturday, the Indians broke a nine-game losing streak (seven in the 1956 season and two of the present), when they blanked the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 41-0.

75 years ago: Sept. 30, 1932

W.N. Damm of Cape Girardeau has leased a quarry site a short distance off the Mississippi River, about four miles south of Cape Girardeau; he will begin loading stone for use in river construction work Monday on a large scale; between 50 and 75 men will be employed.

Announcement is made of the purchase of the two-story frame residence belonging to Harry Miflin, 26 S. Lorimier St., by Joe Schlue; the latter will have the residence remodeled into a two-family apartment.

100 years ago: Sept. 30, 1907

Harry Bridges, born with the fighting instinct and all the patriotism that can be chucked into one American boy, is determined to gain the recognition of President Roosevelt for Cape Girardeau; he urges all loyal residents to meet him on the levee Thursday morning at 5 a.m. to fire a salute of 21 guns as the president passes by in the steamer Grey Eagle.

Paul Hinchey of De Soto, Mo., is in Cape Girardeau for a few days' visit with his brother, W.W. Hinchey, of Broadway.
