Laotian street-gang member is in a local hospital with a gunshot wound, and two others are in Cape Girardeau County jail following high-speed chase involving stolen vehicle yesterday; after chase and car crash, three suspects exited their car; the driver was shot when he displayed semiautomatic, Mac II machine pistol in a "threatening manner."

National Park Service has rejected proposal to keep 20 to 30 wild horses roaming free in Ozark National Scenic Riverways and will proceed with plans to remove them.

25 years ago: Sept. 3, 1979

Labor Day. It is quiet day for law enforcement authorities in Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri; prior publicity about possible traffic tie-ups on bridges over Mississippi and Ohio rivers at Cairo and Metropolis, Ill., apparently curtails traffic problems.

ULLIN, Ill. -- Fire destroys Phoenix Flour Mill here; firefighters from Ullin, Tamms, Mounds, Mound City, Pulaski and Dongola in Illinois fight blaze for three hours in morning; traffic on nearby Illinois Central Railroad is halted for a time, because fire hoses cross over tracks.

50 years ago: Sept. 3, 1954

Jackson is dropped as terminal point for Missouri Pacific Railroad; once-a-day train service will still be maintained but no trains will stay overnight in Jackson; as result, five employees will move their homes.

Plans for lighting much of Highway 61 that lies within Cape Girardeau city limits will be drawn up by State Highway Department and Missouri Utilities Co. officials.

75 years ago: Sept. 3, 1929

Plans are being made for construction of large, modern Spanish-type drug store building on Broadway, just east of Henderson Avenue; Dormeyer Pharmacies is having one-story structure built of light-colored brick; in addition to prescription department, building will contain booths for seating 120 people and complete luncheon service will be offered.

The Rev. A. Mendenhall, pastor of First Christian Church since Jan. 1, 1928, tenders his resignation, effective Oct. 1, to official board of church; Mendenhall has accepted pulpit of church in Aurora, Mo.
