The former Cape Kil Pest Control Co.'s KemPest laboratory north of Cape Girardeau and the former Ilada Energy Reclamation plant near Gale, Illinois, are among 93 sites that have been added to the Superfund National Priorities List of toxic waste dumps.

Although they still hope to keep the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway steam train operating in Jackson, investors have agreed to negotiate a firm purchase price with the St. Charles Tourism Commission.

William Brinkhorst, president of the Student Union Board at State College, flipped a coin yesterday afternoon to kick off a debate at Houck Stadium between gubernatorial candidates Warren E. Hearnes, Democrat, and Ethan A.H. Shepley, Republican; in the evening, the two clashed again, debating before the Jaycees and their guests at the Holiday Inn.

The Rev. W.E. Pitts, president of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, told the city council Monday there is an urgent need for a human rights commission in Cape Girardeau.

1939

A contract is let to Southeast Missouri Lumber Co. by the city council to furnish 85 doors for the Arena Building at the new city park; the company's low bid was $652.50.

During an executive session of the Cape Girardeau City Council, after an open meeting, the council and Hal Lynch, an architect, talk of a possible proposal to build a new municipal swimming pool to take the place of the little one at Fairground Park; it is the consensus that a bond issue would be necessary if the city were to build a pool or to sponsor a project through which one would be built.

1914

The city fathers have asked the Ladies' Cemetery Improvement Association to come up with a new name for the city cemetery; several names have been suggested: Bellevue, Mount Hope, Marble City, Hillcrest, Memorial and Mount Dolores.

Vogelsang Brothers have accepted the offer of the school board to pay something like $1,500 additional to get the contractors to continue building the new Central School.
