25 years ago: Sept. 29, 1984

Cape Girardeau native Dr. Robert E. Kelly, 54, who is a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Mississippi-Oxford, is the winner of this year's Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Merit Award.

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is investigating an anonymous tip to the Environmental Protection Agency of illegal dumping of dioxin and PCBs at Southeast Missouri State University's solid waste dump site; the caller claimed to have witnessed five years ago the burying of five barrels of toxic waste at the old university farm site.

50 years ago: Sept. 29, 1959

Two rainstorms, the first accompanied by an electrical display, brought another 1.05 inches of rain to Cape Girardeau during the night.

A delegation of the Indian Creek settlement and others appeared Monday before the Cape Girardeau County Court asking that something be done about the roads, particularly roadbeds in a creek crossing, where each time it rains, gravel is washed out or left in gravel bars to make the roads impassible; R.O. Hawkins, superintendent of the School District, appeared with the group, because school buses are delayed by the poor road conditions.

75 years ago: Sept. 29, 1934

Rehearsals for the religious pageant to be presented next Wednesday evening under the auspices of the Ministerial Alliance are progressing satisfactorily, says Lealon Jones, chairman of the productions committee.

The Cape Girardeau Municipal Band, under the supervision of William A. Shivelbine, played an hour's concert last night at the Bollinger County Fair at Lutesville, Mo.

100 years ago: Sept. 29, 1909

A rumor is circulating that Gov. H.S. Hadley has appointed W.H. Garanflo, a banker and postmaster of New Madrid, Mo., a member of the Normal School's board of regents, to succeed David W. Hill, who resigned.

Miller Brothers and Edward Arington, joint owners of the 101 Ranch Wild West Show, have decided upon St. Louis for their winter quarters; the show, which carries 20 double carloads of equipment and 500 horses and mules, is in Texas; it will work northward to Cape Girardeau before closing the season.
