25 years ago: Sept. 28, 1980

The public inauguration of Dr. Bill W. Stacy as the 12th president of Southeast Missouri State University will be held next Sunday at Houck Stadium, but a full week of activities to commemorate his inauguration begin today on the campus.

Federal officials in Washington have cleared all the birds at Birdie's Wings and Things of Newcastle's disease, the deadly ailment which has been spreading across the country; meanwhile, the valuable South American macaw, which has been missing from the shop since Wednesday, hasn't been seen in two days.

50 years ago: Sept. 28, 1955

BENTON, Mo. -- Proposals to reorganize school districts in Scott County won in one area and lost in another in special balloting yesterday; voters in Oran, Perkins, Bleda, Bryeans and Hooe districts approved reorganization into a single district by a vote of 649 to 388; the proposal to join District R-4, centered on Benton, with District R-5, centered on Morley, into a single district was soundly defeated.

Under the city's new, modernized tax-billing system, with a machine to do the tedious work that heretofore has been done by hand, 18,000 municipal tax bills have been completed, and the first statements are delivered to homes and businesses today; it marks the first time that the city has ever mailed statements to taxpayers.

75 years ago: Sept. 28, 1930

The Rev. W.O. Schulze preaches his farewell sermon as pastor of Grace Methodist Church in the morning; on Thursday he will move his family to Hamilton, Mo., near St. Joseph, where he will assume active charge of the church there; the Rev. J.W. Ellis, retiring pastor of the Hamilton church, will move to Cape Girardeau the same day as pastor of the local congregation.

William S. Reed of Oak Ridge will be the Democratic candidate for presiding judge of the county court, the Democratic County Central committee decided yesterday at Jackson.

100 years ago: Sept. 28, 1905

Different members of both the gravel road company and the street railway company state that no agreement has been reached between them so that the railway can run out the road from Pacific Street to the fairgrounds; it is believed some agreement will be reached in a few days.

The Phillips Lumber and Coal Co. is moving its yards from Ellis Street down to the new Morgan Oak Street yards.
