25 years ago: Sept. 27, 1986

Local industries have an opportunity to show off their products and people during the second annual Industrial Fair held at West Park Mall; the event, with 22 exhibitors, is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce.

Plans have been finalized for the opening of a new nightclub here next month; Graffiti's, located in the old roller rink building at 610 S. Kingshighway, will hold its grand opening Oct. 9; William and Betty Kuss are owners, along with Jim and Rita Kuss.

50 years ago: Sept. 27, 1961

A good market and price, plus an increase in quantity over last year, has most apple orchard owners and managers in the area in high spirits as the harvest is in full swing; Bill Beggs, owner of Pioneer Orchard near Jackson, says this year's crop is one of the best since Pioneer was started in 1948.

ORAN, Mo. -- Voters in the Oran and Chaffee, Mo., area in a special election yesterday turned down a proposal to combine the R-2 and R-3 school districts through reorganization; it is reported some people in Oran believed that they would lose a high school if the plan were approved; both Oran and Chaffee now have a high school.

75 years ago: Sept. 27, 1936

Dr. H.G. Harmon, president of William Woods College at Fulton, Mo., speaks in the morning at First Christian Church, his topic being "Christian Education."

No word has been received from the Rev. A.L. Cox of East Benton, Ill., as to whether he will accept the call extended a week ago by the Red Star Baptist Church to become its pastor; the congregation sent a unanimous call to the Illinois minister.

100 years ago: Sept. 27, 1911

J.C. "Bud" Mars, noted aviator, arrives in Cape Girardeau on the morning Frisco, coming here in place of Capt. Thomas Baldwin to appear at the fair; Mars will fly Baldwin's big Red Devil in front of the grandstand at the fairgrounds, making his first flight this afternoon.

The fall meeting of the Southeast Missouri Pastoral Conference will be held in the evening at St. Vincent's College; the meeting of area priests will be moderated by the Rev. Thomas Levan, president of the college.
