This year, the Wesley Foundation on the Southeast Missouri State University campus has a meeting house and a new student director; the Rev. Wally Shearburn was appointed in June to a newly created, full-time position for the Wesley Foundation house, 321 N. Ellis St.

A special showing of Civil War artifacts and programs by a Southeast Missouri State University professor, Dr. Frank Nickell, will highlight the opening of the Cape River Heritage Museum on Oct. 16 in the former fire department headquarters at 538 Independence St.

50 years ago: Sept. 26, 1957

William P. Carthers, former county treasurer and active member of all Cape Girardeau Masonic bodies, dies at a local hospital; Caruthers, 76, is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ada Norwine Caruthers; a son and a daughter, a sister and two brothers.

Plans to set up standardized traffic procedures to be followed in funeral processions on Cape Girardeau streets and highways started taking shape last night during a meeting of city officials and funeral directors.

75 years ago: Sept. 26, 1932

Burglars ransacked five establishments in Cape Girardeau over the weekend, wrecking two safes and making off with only about $35; places entered were Cape Sand Co., Sides Oil Co., a gasoline station operated by Simpson Oil Co., Riverside Ice and Fuel Co. oil station and the Cape Girardeau Memorial Works office.

Funeral Mass Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church for its venerable pastor, the Rev. Eberhardt B. Pruente, will be attended by nearly 100 members of the Catholic clergy from Missouri; main celebrant will be the Rt. Rev. Monsignor Joseph Selinger of Jefferson City.

100 years ago: Sept. 26, 1907

The work of clearing the right of way for the Houck Railroad line from Cape Girardeau to Ancell could be completed within a week; it is hoped the line will be completed in November; when it is, work will start on the line to the Thebes Bridge, making two lines from Cape Girardeau to the Cotton Belt.

Among Cape Girardeau's many new arrivals is Harry Sayers and his wife from Salem, Ill.; the couple will be domiciled in a brick house on Themis Street.
