1987

A stormwater drainage problem at an intersection, virtually in the shadows of city hall, could prove costly to correct; a study by Delta Engineering Consultants Inc. of Cape Girardeau has concluded that it would cost $150,000 to address the problems at Middle and Independence streets.

Officials of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, along with state and local DAR officials, paid tribute to the only Missourian to have held the highest national office in the society; a DAR marker ceremony and dedication was held yesterday in New Lorimier Cemetery at the grave of Aliene Wilson Groves.

1962

Mayor Walter H. Ford is told that Cape Girardeau is in line for an expanded federal grant to help finance its sewage disposal system; the information comes from the head of the state Water Pollution Control Board, who tells the mayor by telephone that the new funds will be appropriated under a newly enacted public works bill.

Charles Boyd, chairman of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees' Crump fishing lake project, reports that lake petitions have been accepted by the county court and a $72,000 bond issue will be on the November ballot.

1937

Missouri's Golden Troopers are back home, having returned from an unsuccessful trip to New York City and an attempt to win national honors among American Legion drum and bugle corps; the Troopers ranked 19th in the competition with 87 picked units.

A mass meeting has been called for tonight at the chamber of commerce to organize the final push for subscriptions in the big factory drive; the city has raised $47,302 of the necessary $75,000 for the construction of a manufacturing plant here for Superior Electric Products Corp.

Tomorrow is free day at the big fair for all school children; by order of the school board, there will be no classes after today during the rest of the week, owing to the fair attractions.

The city jail at Fornfelt burned Saturday night and with it two prisoners, who it is thought set fire to the building, either accidentally or purposely with hopes of escaping; the identities of the prisoners aren't known.
