D.W. "Wayne" Goddard, former Southeast Missouri State University head football coach and former Cape Girardeau Central High School assistant principal, died Saturday at his home in Cherokee Village, Ark., at the age of 70.

Drury Hotels Corp. is building a 36,000-square-foot receiving center on Bloomfield Road, west of I-55 and on a tract purchased from Albert Keller; the building will serve as a central distribution facility for all Drury Inns.

50 years ago: Sept. 24, 1959

Members of the Cape Girardeau School Board were told at a luncheon meeting yesterday that a strike of carpenters is delaying work on the recently opened, but unfinished, Alma Schrader School; under the most favorable conditions, it will be Nov. 15 before all work is completed.

A Goodwill Industries Store opens at 115 Themis St.; the store will sell new and repaired goods, with the money earned being used to help disabled people.

75 years ago: Sept. 24, 1934

Through the additional assistants provided by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration's part-time employment of students, the library at State College will remain open each evening from 7 to 9:30; Girardeans, other than students, will be permitted to use the library.

A new plan for locating a golf course in Cape Girardeau that would be accessible to the public is announced by E.L. McClintock, who is leading the move; although the location hasn't been settled, it will likely be the Brown Owl site, 3 miles northwest of Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Sept. 24, 1909

The farm north of Cape Girardeau that for years has been the scene of revelry is a thing of the past; proprietor I.H. Lake closed the resort last night; owing to the many recent deaths on the Frisco tracks or at Bloody Bridge, across Sloan Creek, close to the farm, a protest was lodged with the prosecuting attorney that the farm was causing heavy loss of life in the north end of the city.

A dozen or so merchants meet at the Commercial Club rooms in the evening and organize a permanent Merchants' Trading Association.
