Local doctor wants city to adopt more stringent regulations to curb illegal tobacco sales to minors; Dr. Richard Martin, ear, nose and throat specialist, has asked city council to require merchants to obtain license to sell cigarettes; if merchant violates tobacco laws preventing sale of cigarettes to minors, he would lose his license.
Twelve-year-old boy is one of four people police apprehend for buying and selling cocaine in 400 block of Good Hope; three men were also arrested this week in connection with cocaine and crack sales and possession.

Jackson -- More than $41,000 of protested 1975 school taxes have been ordered refunded to seven railroad and utility companies because Cape Girardeau County school districts didn't sufficiently lower their tax rates that year; order was contained in ruling handed down by First Division Circuit Judge Stanley A. Grimm in lawsuit which had been pending since early in 1976.
"Life on the Mississippi" is theme for this year's Southeast Missouri State University Homecoming, scheduled for Oct. 28 and 29; for first time, winners of Alumni Merit Awards will be presented during Homecoming at dinner in Ballroom and Party Room in University Center; previous years, awards were presented during sprint commencement services.

Courageous young woman, afflicted with polio and confined to rocking bed, and her high-school sweetheart, infantry private first class soon to go overseas, were wed last night in double-ring ceremony at St. Francis Hospital; tying knot were Peggy Beardsley, 19, and Pfc. Robert N. King, 20, both of Malden.
Police reveal more than $2,300 in jewelry, watches and cash were taken in burglary at home of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Klarsfeld, 810 Morgan Oak, Monday night; two items were valued at $850 and $700; first was lady's diamond ring and second was lady's bracelet watch.
75 years ago: Sept. 24, 1927
Favored by weather, two construction companies engaged in grading and building bridges on U.S. 61 along nine-mile stretch in immediate vicinity of Cape Girardeau are making rapid progress; 118 men and 66 teams are employed by two companies in rushing work on road projects; contract involves expenditure of more than $200,000.
Benton -- Irene Pobst, attractive high-school girl of Chaffee, will reign as queen over annual Neighbor Day Oct. 6; she was selected last night from list of entries representing every high school in county; names of all prospective queens, selected by various schools, were placed in box and name of queen was drawn.
