The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents yesterday approved the establishment of a Center for Speech and Hearing in honor of the man credited with much of the growth and quality of the school's present speech clinic, M.G. Lorberg Jr.

Former Southeast linebacker Dennis Lockhart has signed a free-agent contract with the Chicago Blitz of the United States Football League.

50 years ago: Sept. 23, 1958

Passenger service over the last link of the Frisco's Hoxie line, once a flourishing business between Cape Girardeau and Hoxie, Ark., will end shortly on the final remaining section, between Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Hoxie; passenger service between Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff over the Hoxie line was discontinued several years ago.

Firefighters from all over Southeast Missouri will meet in Cape Girardeau Thursday and Friday for the 25th annual Fire School of the Southeast Missouri Fire Fighters Association.

With time drawing near for the Cape Girardeau Horse Show and Rodeo, scheduled to begin Oct. 2, organizers are trying to provide adequate tent and show space; the committee has secured Fairground Park for the big event, but since City Commissioner Louis Wittmore has ask that the baseball field not be used, sufficient space for tents to be filled with stalls and corrals is needed.

A new combination hearse-ambulance for Lorberg Undertaking Co. is brought to Cape Girardeau by Carleton Lorberg, who purchased it at Freeport, Ill.

100 years ago: Sept. 23, 1908

Parties from various states have begun arriving for the big Homecomers celebration; at present, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Nebraska, Arkansas and Texas are represented.

Beginning tomorrow, both motor cars on the Houck road will run on quick time at frequent intervals to carry crowds to the Jackson Homecomers convention; in addition to the electric motor cars, the morning passenger train to Jackson will carry the early birds, and returning in the evening will bring over the crowds who desire to return to Cape Girardeau.
