50 years ago: Sept. 23, 1954

All highway troopers in Southeast Missouri were ordered to Jefferson City immediately after bloody riot broke out at Missouri state prison in Jefferson City; four Cape Girardeau area troopers, Sgt. P.R. Little, Morley G. Swingle, I.E. Beard and Glenn W. Lampley, left immediately.

George Hampton, member of Cape Girardeau Police Department for over 10 years, is promoted to captain on heels of announcement of dismissal of Capt. Marshall F. Morton.

75 years ago: Sept. 23, 1929

Cape Girardeau County Fair closed its 71st edition with some record numbers; gate receipts showed that between 10,000 and 11,000 people attended last day of fair; receipts for week indicate approximately 25,000 attended fair.

Goodyear dirigible "Vigiland," visits Cape Girardeau, landing on Cuskaden field south of city on Highway 61; airship sails over city several times, coming low enough for pilot to talk to officials of Whitledge Service Co., Goodyear agency, on Middle Street, and receive instructions for landing.
