The Nell Holcomb School District may ask voters in April to approve a bond issue for construction of a high school.

1964

The 1964 SEMO District Fair came to a successful conclusion over the weekend; a record-breaking Saturday crowd helped boost overall attendance for the week to 56,295, the fourth-highest total in fair history.

Attorney James A. Finch Jr., representing the Cape Girardeau television station, KFVS12, tells the city council a cable television franchise here would "adversely affect the economy of the community, not just KFVS"; on two earlier occasions, W.R. Withers Jr., representing Gregg Cablevision Corp. of Nashville, Tennessee, has appeared before the council seeking such a franchise.

1939

Wreckers have begun razing the fine old J.F. Brooks dwelling at 1451 Broadway; among the old pieces removed from the home was an old piano, which had been in the family since shortly before the Civil War; a half-dozen men were required to carry the instrument to the home of Mrs. C.E. Stiver, 1438 Luce St., one of Brooks' daughters.

Retail merchants of Cape Girardeau, meeting at the chamber of commerce building, adopt a resolution recommending to the city council that a city merchants' license rate of 50 cents per $1,000 on gross sale of all merchandise be established to replace the present rate of $1.75 per $1,000 business done.

1914

Chairman A.N. Tinsley of the fall festivities committee has signed a contract with the Pain Fireworks Display Co. of New York for two great pageants on the riverfront Wednesday and Friday evenings of next week -- fair week.

Cattle buyers were in Millersville last week; because of the failure of the crops, many farmers were anxious to sell their cattle before the cold winter months come; among those selling were Jake Hahs, Joel Hopkins, J.W. Wilfert, J.W. Riemann, and Joe and Early Runnels.
