1987

According to Charles Haubold, financing for the Cape LaCroix Creek flood control project will likely be arranged within a week; Haubold, who has headed the effort to secure private funding for the project, says he hopes construction can begin by the end of this month.

The city of Cape Girardeau, which is considering accepting the offer of Southeast Missouri State University of its air-supported structure, would have to spend from $77,600 to $192,600 to move and re-erect the bubble for use as a recreational facility.

1962

Cape Girardeau police are investigating the theft of a pay telephone at the Hargis Store and the attempted theft of a second telephone booth at Popp's Grocery on Cape Rock Drive; at the Hargis Store, the telephone was pried from the wall and the upper unit taken away; at the Popp store, thieves were scared from the scene by residents there.

The Potosi Presbytery, meeting at Parma, Mo., approves the establishment of a second Presbyterian Church in Cape Girardeau; Westminster Presbyterian Church is the name selected for the new congregation.

1937

Prisoners made a nifty cache in a window casing at the side of the bullpen of the city jail, police have discovered; a small board which closed the casing over the sash weight had been removed and inside this hidden box officers found tobacco, matches and even a bottle containing intoxicating liquor; a string was also found, which was used by prisoners to pull articles to the bullpen from confederates outside.

John W. Reid, former schoolteacher of Oak Ridge, is appointed treasurer of Cape Girardeau County and Emil Steck of Fornfelt is named treasurer of Scott County by Missouri Gov. Lloyd Stark.

1912

A.S. Handmacher, who has tailoring shops in Jackson and New Madrid, Mo., has bought the business of Fred Goodwin on Main Street and will make it his headquarters; Handmacher plans to move his family from New Madrid to Cape Girardeau.

Charlotte Gallaher, who taught in the Cape Girardeau School District last year and who now lives at Cosgy, Mo., arrives here to spend a few days.
