CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Death of 1994 Chaffee High School valedictorian Steven W. Goetz, 18, had former teachers and classmates in somber mood yesterday; Goetz collapsed during pick-up basketball game at student recreation center at University Of Missouri-Columbia Wednesday night, and he was pronounced dead just over an hour later.

Jackson public schools welcomed more than 100 additional students to classes this school year; Scott City's enrollment was up 28 students.

25 years ago: Sept. 2, 1979

KELSO, Mo. -- Majestic arches and statues inside St. Augustine Catholic Church are to be hidden behind scaffolding for few more months, as restoration of 90-year-old building continues; work began early this summer after plans were made in 1978, when parish observed its centennial.

F.E. Rhodes has established Cape Ice Co. on Highway 61 west of Cape Girardeau; new business will serve area on a wholesale basis.

50 years ago: Sept. 2, 1954

Gerald Kelley, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James O. Kelley of Sikeston, Mo., is in Saint Francis Hospital in good condition; Kelley was injured late yesterday afternoon when he dropped 10-year-old artillery shell and it exploded, smashing his leg.

Barbara Miller was crowned Miss Homecomers of 1954 in special ceremony last evening; she is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas B. Miller.

75 years ago: Sept. 2, 1929

Labor Day; Cape Girardeau businesses suspend operations in observance of holiday, with many gathering at Fairground Park for picnic sponsored by congregation of Centenary Methodist Church.

Preparations for rebuilding terminal facilities of Missouri Pacific Railroad in Cape Girardeau are begun, when crew of workers starts tearing up light rails from Standard Oil Co. plant south to connection with main line of Frisco Railroad.
