The election for incorporation of a north Cape Girardeau County and south Perry County water supply district was approved by an overwhelming majority of voters, 563 to 16, yesterday; by virtue of the election results, the district is permanently incorporated.

Attendance at the SEMO District Fair sets a new, one-day record, with 24,249 people jamming Arena Park; an enlarged harness racing program, postponed from earlier in the week by rain, is watched by 943 patrons.

1939

A.C. Shumway, a Cotton Belt Railroad locomotive fireman of Fornfelt, sustained head injures when a southbound fast freight of the Cotton Belt derailed and partially wrecked Monday night when going over the Missouri Pacific main line tracks near Gorham, Illinois, 45 miles north of Illmo; Erskin Miller, 44, of Fornfelt, a Cotton Belt employee, is seriously hurt at the scene this morning, when a portion of a freight car falls on him.

An effort is being made by the city to have a sub-certification office of the WPA in Cape Girardeau, so men and women won't have to arrange for transportation to Jackson.

1914

The same bunch of strategists who helped President Woodrow Wilson solve the Mexican situation while standing around on the street corners in Jackson is very busy making suggestions on how to conduct the European campaign; great battalions of soldiers are daily annihilated and glorious victories won by these pretend statesmen.

The American Clothing Co. has leased the room occupied the past few years by the Shepherd Electrical Co., and will combine the two rooms, making this store one of the largest in the city; stock for the new store will be here in a few days; the Shepherd Electrical has moved to Water Street.
