A volunteer effort to address the problem of exposed asbestos on two old train engines in Capaha and Arena parks is gathering steam; trying to save the trains are the city's three Optimist clubs, the Southeast Missouri District Council of Carpenters, Laborers Local 1104 and the Southeast Missouri State University Interfraternity Council.

Tele-Communications Inc., which provides cable television service in Cape Girardeau and Jackson, announces a major expansion; basic service will more than double, with five new stations available Friday, and seven more being added on Dec. 1.

50 years ago: Sept. 19, 1961

According to the State Highway Department engineers, if all the earth now being moved -- and to be moved -- in the construction of Interstate 55 were dumped in a 40-acre field, it would elevate its height 70 feet; the current project covers 14.1 miles in Cape Girardeau County, 1.8 miles in Scott County and four-tenths of a mile on U.S. 61 beneath the Wedekind Park overpass.

75 years ago: Sept. 19, 1936

Mrs. Ella K. Miller and her daughter, Marjorie, and two other women left Cape Girardeau yesterday for Washington, D.C., to attend the national Grand Army of the Republic convention; they are traveling in a car and trailer, the latter built in Cape Girardeau by C.E. Tinsley.

CAIRO, Ill. -- After slot machines had operated steadily for a year and a half here, during which time the city collected about $16,000 in fines, about 300 machines were hastily taken out of action this week after it was learned that 88 people would be charged with violation of state gaming laws.

100 years ago: Sept. 19, 1911

The Tri-County Fair begins at Sikeston, Mo., in the morning; the Frisco will run a special train from Cape Girardeau to Sikeston Friday and Saturday mornings, returning at 11 each night.

With County Court judges Will Hirsch of Cape Girardeau and Martin L. Haupt of Egypt Mills voting in favor and Judge Charles Sievers of Apple Creek Township against, a measure is passed ordering the audit of the court's books.
