Southeast Missouri lending institutions will have about $17.5 million worth of low-interest loans available for single-family home purchases, following the approval of a bond issue to fund the loans; the bonds will be sold under a special state program to encourage home sales through the financing of low-interest, long-term loans.

Cheatham's Furniture store, located in the old Montgomery Ward store building on Main Street, holds its official grand opening.

50 years ago: Sept. 19, 1958

Jim New of Risco, Mo., whose design of a space station won him a Navy Science Cruiser award at last spring's Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair, will leave early tomorrow from St. Louis' Lambert Field for San Diego, Calif., and a week of scientific orientation at Navy bases and aboard the aircraft carrier Bennington.

Milk bottling facilities of the Midwest Dairy Products Corp. plant in Cape Girardeau will be suspended shortly, but other phases of company operations will be maintained; milk for distribution by the company plant here will be bottled at Centralia, Ill.

75 years ago: Sept. 19, 1933

Excavation work has begun for the one-story, five-room brick residence to be erected in the 1500 block on Themis Street for Mr. and Mrs. John Luchow; Luchow, a river boat commander, purchased the lot from lawyer Kenrick Burrough.

Cape Girardeau city officials learn the federal government won't take tax bills as security for funds advanced to construct a storm sewer here; the tax bills were issued against the property in the storm sewer district; the government desires the city to put up bonds as security for the money advanced.

100 years ago: Sept. 19, 1908

Sister Erharder, a teacher in St. Mary's parochial school, left yesterday for St. Louis where she was compelled to go for a change of climate from this city; for five years she has taught the children of the parish with unusual zeal and success.

The new front in the Leher building, soon to be occupied by J.B. Schneider, is about completed; Schneider expects to be in his new place by the first of October.
