Grand jury will investigate drug trafficking and other drug-related crimes in Cape Girardeau in effort to put offenders behind bars, says Presiding Circuit Judge A.J. Seier; Seier says increase in drug activity in "certain areas of the city" has made convening grand jury necessary.

Work on three highway intersection improvements, two in Cape Girardeau and one in Jackson, are nearing completion; Route K-Mt. Auburn intersection project is nearly finished; final section of paving is under way at re-configured North Kingshighway, Mt. Auburn, Route K and Lexington intersection; and, in Jackson, widening of intersection at West Jackson (Highway 34-72) and West Lane is complete, and state is ready to install traffic signals at intersection.

25 years ago: Sept. 18, 1977

The Rev. Richard L. Harrison, director of Christian Nurture Presbyterian Home for Children located at Farmington, is guest speaker at annual Apple Creek Presbyterian homecoming service; annual affair is held at historical old Apple Creek Presbyterian Church near Pocahontas.

Construction will begin immediately on new Del-Farms supermarket store building to be located north of present market on William and South Sprigg.

50 years ago: Sept. 18, 1952

Advancing with cool front that brings pronounced drop in temperatures, lightning-flecked rain storm out of north drenches city in evening with .60-inch downpour; several hundred football fans at Houck Stadium are sent scurrying for cover when first sheets of water begin pouring over field minute or so before end of first half; high school band, forming at north end for half-time show, dashes for cover beneath stands, but most members are drenched.

Dr. H.T. Moiles, after five years as manager of Capahas baseball team, has decided he will resign at close of season; Miles says work with team was taking up too much of his time; in past five years he has headed Caps, his teams have won 137 victories and lost 38.

75 years ago: Sept. 18, 1927

Fiftieth anniversary of laying of cornerstone of little brick edifice at Fountain and Themis that houses Christ Episcopal Church is observed in morning; at time of cornerstone laying in 1877, there were only few Episcopalians in Cape Girardeau; of original congregation, Mrs. Jennie A. Wilson is only survivor.

Buddy Bartels is 1927 golf champion of Cape Girardeau Country Club; defeating Andy Juden, 3 up, for title in 36-hole match play at Country Club, young Bartels carries honor for second time in his career, he having won one year previous; Bartels, as winner, will receive handsome silver loving cup.
