A deluge of cars yesterday evening took SEMO District Fair officials by surprise; 2,675 cars were parked in a two-hour period as 20,910 visitors came to the fair yesterday, possibly setting a record for the number of daily visitors.
East Perry Lumber Co. yesterday purchased the Black Forest property at a public auction foreclosure sale conducted by Mercantile Bank; the company plans to carefully manage the timber on the 1,041-acre tract north of Cape Girardeau and hopefully lease the area where the replica German villages and lodge are.
Clarence N. Crites, Jackson city superintendent, died unexpectedly last night at his home; Crites, employed by the city for 36 years, was in many respects Jackson's city manager, although the town uses the mayor-council form of government.

A new concrete bridge has been completed by the Cape Special Road District in the Houck grove on Bloomfield Road; the bridge has a 22-foot roadway and takes the place of an old, narrow bridge.

J.H. Cronan of St. Louis, representative of the St. Louis Basket and Box Co., arrived at Delta in the morning on business; he says a company has been formed to take over the land from which the company is removing the timber and to put it on the market in units of 40 acres; the land will be sold on long terms with a small down payment.
