The Rev. David E. Seabaugh, minister at First Presbyterian Church at Festus, Mo., is guest speaker for the annual vesper service on the grounds of Old Apple Creek Church near Pocahontas; Seabaugh is a native of Cape Girardeau and was raised in Jackson.

A service of commission is held at Westminster Presbyterian Church in the evening for the church's new director of youth ministries, David S. Prince.

50 years ago: Sept. 16, 1959

Pamela Weber of Dexter, Mo., winning over more than 50 contestants, was crowed queen of the SEMO District Fair last night in the exposition's first queen contest; taking center stage in front of the grandstand this evening will be the Ray Price Grand Ole Opry show.

Farmers & Merchants Bank has been issued a certificate of authority by the State Banking Commission to establish a walk-up, drive-in service facility on South West End Boulevard, opposite the Sunny Hill establishment.

75 years ago: Sept. 16, 1934

The Rev. Frederick Lorberg of Jacksonville, Fla., who is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.G. Lorberg, delivers the sermon at the English service at Trinity Lutheran Church.

William Arnold "Sonny" Lee, a Sikeston, Mo., lad of 18, shoots his way to the championship in the district golf tournament at the Cape Girardeau Country Club; using a salvaged set of clubs patched up with tacks and adhesive tape, Lee edges out Abe Stuber of Cape Girardeau, John Phillips of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Orville Lumsden of Sikeston, last year's champion.

100 years ago: Sept. 16, 1909

Broadway's new store, to be known as The Toggery, has opened for business; Katie Strong, who came here recently from Chicago, has opened the store at 614 Broadway and will cater only to the business of women.

The Company K lads hold a drill in the evening in the armory on Independence Street, with a good attendance; the boys will soon have a handball court installed and also some other paraphernalia for athletics.
