The hottest attraction at this year's SEMO District Fair may be the pig races at Pork Chop Downs; the pigs are part of the Bob Hale Pig Racing Stables of Sikeston, Missouri.
Plans by Union Electric Co. for construction of a new water tower and a new water tank have been approved by Cape Girardeau's Planning and Zoning Commission; if approved by the city council, a new, 45-foot high, 1-million-gallon water tower will be built adjacent to the existing tower on Gordonville Road; construction of 250,000-gallon water tank would be at the Ramsey Branch water plant.
Discussing State College's new budget at the Rotary Club meeting, college president Dr. Mark F. Scully notes one of the items in the new budget is $3 million for a new field house; however, that the college is giving first priority to an extensive addition to Kent Library, as well as a second classroom building to meet demands of enrollment.
W.R. Withers Jr. of Nashville, Tennessee, representing the Gregg Television Service, appears a second time before the city council to ask for a franchise to provide cable television service to Cape Girardeau; the plan is opposed by the Cape Girardeau station, KFVS-TV.
The attractive, 30-year-old daughter of a Cape Girardeau couple may become a member of the city council of Detroit; Hazel McClendon, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. McClendon, is running for the council seat, along with 24 other candidates.
Cape Girardeau County can't hope to get more funds in the immediate future, according to Mrs. Myrtle Pangbrun, head of the county Social Security office; county allotments have been cut drastically because of lack of money in the state Social Security fund.
Frisco Railroad's superintendent is having its property at Cape Girardeau cleaned up; last week, a big force of men cut the weeds along the riverfront from the freight depot south, and all the old shacks and rubbish has been cleared away; a number of very undesirable residents were routed also.
From all appearances, the school board will have to resort to improvised school rooms again this year, if new pupils continue to come in; classrooms are fairly stuffed, despite the addition of the new Washington School and the expansion of Lincoln School.
