Sgt. Karen Sullinger, the first female promoted to the rank of sergeant within the Cape Girardeau Police Department, has resigned to become home-based counselor/sexual assault education specialist with WISER Inc.

50 years ago: Sept. 14, 1961

Laughter fills the fairgrounds as thousands of schoolchildren and adults take advantage of Cape Girardeau and Cape County School Day at the SEMO District Fair; stars from the Tex Ritter Show will perform tonight in front of the grandstand.

Conversion of the County Farm into a park is proposed to the county court and receives tacit approval contingent on sufficient interest by residents in a petition and subsequent election of a mill tax for park maintenance; presenting the request are Earl W. Kirchhoff, A.C. Brase and John Blue of Cape Girardeau and Carl Penzel, Bill J. Thompson and Bernard Schaper of Jackson.

75 years ago: Sept. 14, 1936

Members of the Professional Photographers Association of Southeast Missouri open a two-day convention here; the picture-takers from this district and Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky and Southern Illinois are in attendance, with sessions being held at the H.L. Lueders studio, 427 Broadway.

Gravel is being hauled on the stretch of North Main Street in the Red Star suburb, along which WPA workers earlier established grade and built curbs; the sector will be paved with blacktop as soon as the base is finished.

100 years ago: Sept. 14, 1911

There were exciting times along the levee yesterday when two employees of the excursion steamer Sidney ran amok; the roustabouts engaged in a foot race with Cape Girardeau police officers, which later became a marathon that included officers of the boat and a number of residents; clubs and rocks were thrown and a revolver fired; one disturber was caught near the Frisco passenger station while the other was found hidden in a barrel near the power plant in the north end.
