What were believed to be human remains found at a Cape Girardeau dump site at the Lone Star Industries cement plant over a week ago turned out to be the remains of a black bear.

Another big crowd rolled through the turnstiles last night at the SEMO District Fair, as overall attendance continues to push to near-record levels; more than 13,000 people visited the fair yesterday; grandstand entertainment tonight will be Ronnie Milsap.

50 years ago: Sept. 14, 1959

Thousands of people thronged Arena Park yesterday for a preview peak at the largest of all SEMO District Fairs, which will formally open tomorrow.

A contingent of 30 Boy Scouts and a number of unit leaders and committeemen from the Shawnee District, Order of the Arrow, began work yesterday on the plat of land adjoining the Trail of Tears State Park, which was deeded to the Southeast Missouri Council last fall by the park board; a log house on the 22-acre tract is being dismantled; the logs will be used to build three-sided shelters for winter camping.

75 years ago: Sept. 14, 1934

The Dolly Hat Shoppe, part of a chain that has headquarters in St. Louis, opens at 34 N. Main St.; Esther House of St. Louis is the manager.

A field of about 50 golfers is expected to shoot the Cape Girardeau Country Club course Sunday in a quest of championships in the open tournament sponsored by the Southeast Missouri Golf Association; Orville Lumsden of Sikeston, Mo., is the defending champion.

100 years ago: Sept. 14, 1909

County Sheriff W.F. Schade has served indictments on Cape Girardeau's mayor and six of its city councilmen; the charges against them deal with the employment of Henry Roher of St. Louis to act as consulting engineer in the work of paving of the downtown streets.

Rurie Lesem of Kennett High School, son of M.E. Lesem, manager of the Roth Tobacco Co., has enrolled at the Normal School; under the solicitation of Professor H.L. Albert, he will play solo cornet in the Normal Military Band.
