Saying they didn't want to lose "bird in hand," Cape Girardeau Airport Advisory Board yesterday failed to approve motion to halt plan to renovate airport terminal building so matter could be further studied; board in December approved motion to go forward with $1.1 million renovation project after more than year of deliberations over whether to renovate terminal or build new one.

Attendance yesterday at SEMO District Fair was estimated at 6,700; awards for 4-H and FFA exhibits were handed out, and fiddlers competed for much-sought-after title of area's best fiddler; Bob King of Jackson took first place in fiddling competition; Jason Strickland of Cape Girardeau, second place, and Glenn Kirchoff of Cape Girardeau, third place.

25 years ago: Sept. 13, 1976

Benton - Intensive manhunt is under way for four armed men who escaped from Scott County jail shortly before midnight Sunday; escapees, including one who sawed his way out of jail last April, are considered armed and dangerous; they took with them Thompson .45-caliber machine-gun, .22-caliber rifle, and .25-caliber automatic pistol from vault in jail office.

Postscript to oral warning given in August by Supt. Arthur H. Turner concerning "burdensome federal regulations" for handicapped training is followed up formally by school board; board unanimously endorses letter written by Turner protesting aspects of federal rules drafted by Department of Health, Education and Welfare; letter was mailed to director of district office of civil rights.

50 years ago: Sept. 13, 1951

Last night's hefty crowd at SEMO District Fair got drenched by wind-blown downpour; hundreds were driven to shelter of Arena Building or beneath tents and whatever other covering they could find on saturated grounds; weeping skies forced cancellation of second performance of Cherokee Hammon's Wild West Rodeo; skies clear today and fair officials are encouraged that rest of week's attendance will be high.

New Emerald Street fire station has been accepted by City Council; new station, which completes series of improvements initiated Dec. 5, 1949, when $165,000 bond issue was passed, will be formally opened Monday morning.

75 years ago: Sept. 13, 1926

Quality of races at upcoming Cape County Fair will be high; Ben Green, racing master, has received notice that two of fastest horses in Illinois will come to races here; Homer Walton of Danville will bring his "John S" and "Captain Dudley," both of which have had unusual success at Illinois Fairs this year.

Cairo, Ill. - Asa Beadles, hurler for local Coca-Cola baseball team, who was hit on head by pitched ball during game with Dexter, Mo., team at Dexter Sunday, is in hospital, but is improving; Beadles was knocked down by throw and, after receiving emergency treatment, was brought to Cairo hospital.
