It's Agriculture Appreciation Day at the 134th annual SEMO District Fair in Arena Park; judging of various crafts and animals begins; in front of the grandstand in the evening is the always-crowd-pleasing tractor pull.

Following in the footsteps of a restructured summer recreation program, an expanded lineup of fall/winter recreation activities is being offered by the city's Parks and Recreation Department; new to the schedule are five new adult activities, including several cooking classes.

1964

Sounds of bulldozers and other heavy equipment have been heard at Crump for about a year, as work on the State Conservation Commission's Lake Girardeau moves forward; currently, the construction sounds are coming from the road leading to the lake, which is being raised and widened by the county.

Midget auto racing has been added to the list of activities at this year's SEMO District Fair, which begins Tuesday; district auto racing buffs haven't seen the midget races here for 15 years.

1939

Speaking at the police school in progress at the Armory in Cape Girardeau, FBI agent W.H. Espey cautions lawmen that women prisoners are just as dangerous as men; Espey reminds officers that dealing with a banker's wife is different from handling the moll of a common thug.

The greatest enrollment in a regular term in the history of the Teachers College is established, with 1,150 students filing their registration card; the large influx of students hasn't created a housing emergency yet, but more students are expected to enroll later this week and next.

1914

The Capahas will get another chance at the Chaffee, Missouri, baseball team; the Caps protested a recent game with Chaffee, maintaining the Scott County team didn't comply with the league rule that each team must play four home men; the league president has found in favor of the Caps, and the game will be replayed.

Sen. and Mrs. R.B. Oliver receive a cablegram from their daughter, Marguerite, who is in London; she will be sailing in September from London for Boston.
