25 years ago: Sept. 12, 1983

Officials of the SEMO District Fair are hoping for fine weather and good attendance as the annual exposition kicks off; organizers are hoping to break last year's attendance of 110,000.

Two-way Broadway in Cape Girardeau is only a one-way shipment away from becoming reality; but even if the shipment of traffic signal lights and brackets arrives today or tomorrow, it will probably be early next week before the traffic signals are in place and traffic begins flowing both ways again.

50 years ago: Sept. 12, 1958

All previous single-day attendance records were shattered at the SEMO District Fair yesterday by a milling, happy throng of children and adults participating in Cape Girardeau Day and Cape County School Day; 14,476 people attended the day's events; another big crowd is expected tonight for the Roy Acuff and Grand Ole Opry show.

The issue of $295,000 Cape Girardeau airport improvement bonds was bid in at an interest rate of 3.5105 percent before the city council yesterday; there were six bidders, and the winner was a combination bid by the Blewer, Glynn & Co. of St. Louis and Baum & Co. of Kansas City.

75 years ago: Sept. 12, 1933

The Sturdivant Bank building, at Main and Themis streets, was bid in by the bank at a foreclosure sale yesterday for $13,000; the next best offer was by Louis Hecht for $12,500; the sale was under a deed of trust for $35,000 given the Sturdivant Bank by the former Southeast Missouri Trust Co.

Enrollment at Teachers College at noon is 540 as compared to 504 at noon last year and 536 for the entire day; the second day of enrollment finds corridors filled with upper classmen and several freshman applicants, who were't here yesterday.

100 years ago: Sept. 12, 1908

J.E. Clark has taken over the management of the O.K. Barber Shop in the St. Charles Hotel building, Main and Themis streets; he will conduct it as he did a barber shop in St. Louis and elsewhere for the last 30 years.

A thief crawls into the apartment of Dr. C.A. Vorbeck on the third floor of the Houck Building, Main and Themis streets, and gets away with about $175 and considerable jewelry and valuables.
