10 years ago: Sept. 12, 1991

Hundreds of volunteers hit streets yesterday morning selling special Y.E.L.L. for Newspapers edition and generating excitement and awareness about literacy; all copies of edition sold out; in all, 9,000 Y.E.L.L. newspapers were printed - 7,000 by Southeast Missourian and 2,000 by The Cash-Book Journal in Jackson; project raised close to $13,000 for literacy programs.

Area schools are dealing with problem that's unusual for mid-September - 90-degree heat in classrooms that lack air conditioning; because of heat, classes at Notre Dame High School will dismiss early today and tomorrow.

25 years ago: Sept. 12, 1976

Holiday atmosphere pervades Arena Park grounds as final touches are being added for opening of SEMO District Fair Tuesday; livestock entries are arriving in great numbers, entries for exhibits in Arena Building proper are being registered today through Thursday, concessions and rides on midway are going up.

Sikeston - The Rev. Kenneth W. Sievers is installed as pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church here and Christ Lutheran Church at Matthews in afternoon ceremony held at Concordia Church; the Rev. Oscar A. Gerken of Cape Girardeau, first vice president of Missouri District-Missouri Synod, gives installation sermon.

50 years ago: Sept. 12, 1951

Cherokee Ranch Wild West Rodeo is featured attraction in evening at SEMO District Fair; real fun begins tomorrow, when attendance at annual exhibition is expected to reach its peak; schools will all close at noon tomorrow and children of all ages will flock to Arena Park show grounds for their first view of this year's events.

Body of S-Sgt. Robert P. Kaufman of McClure, Ill., who was killed in action in Korea Feb. 12, is expected to arrive in Cape Girardeau Saturday; it will later be taken to home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Pink Kaufman, at McClure; service will be at high school in McClure Monday, and burial will be in Lindsay Cemetery.

75 years ago: Sept. 12, 1926

Members of Christ Evangelical Sunday school and church spend day at old fairgrounds, occasion being annual fellowship picnic; worship service is held in open air at fairgrounds in morning, with fellowship dinner being held afterward.

Mrs. A.S.J. Baldridge resumes her instructions of Wimodausis class of Centenary Methodist Church, having returned from Essex, where she spent summer with her husband, who is pastor of Methodist church there.
