SEMO District Fair is jumping to the sounds of rock-and-roll in the evening, as John Waite with guest group Shooting Star takes the stage in front of the grandstand; the rock concert, sponsored in conjunction with the Southeast Missouri State University Student Activities Council, is a first for the fair.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has announced the appointment of Stephan B. Moody as ranger at Trail of Tears State Park near Cape Girardeau; he replaces Ruben Templeton.
A unanimous call of the Southside Baptist Church, has been accepted by the Rev. Charles Marshall of Illmo, who will begin duties as pastor of the church on Oct. 2.
For the benefit of Catholic students attending State College this year, Mass will be celebrated each Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Cape Catholic High School; until it is determined how large the attendance will be, the services will be held in the school auditorium; it is anticipated some 200 Catholic students will take advantage of the Mass.
When classes at State Teachers College begin the fall term this morning, one member of the faculty, who has been on hand each term for 30 years to welcome the new students, isn't present; for the first time, Professor B.F. Johnson, head of the mathematics departments, misses the initial roll call in his classes; he is convalescing in a local hospital from a recent operation.
CHAFFEE, Mo. -- An order has been received to prepare for the closing of the transient camp here, with government agencies to take over assistance of most of the camp residents; there are 165 men and 16 families being assisted in Chaffee's camp.
Four more carloads of vitrified paving bricks have been received, completing the number for the laying of one block; so the work of paving will be started Monday morning on Broadway, between Middle and Frederick streets.
The Rev. Adolph Kistler, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, announces he will leave Cape Girardeau for Bristol, Tenn., where he has been called by a congregation.
