25 years ago: Sept. 11, 1982

John Glenn -- astronaut, U.S. senator, and Democratic presidential hopeful -- is the keynote speaker at a breakfast fund-raiser for Democratic 8th Congressional candidate Jerry Ford of Cape Girardeau.

The question of whether the so-called "Blue Law" ban against Sunday sales should be lifted will be decided by Cape Girardeau County voters in the November election; the Open Sundays Committee has collected substantially more than the 2,015 signatures of registered voters necessary to put the issue on the ballot.

50 years ago: Sept. 11, 1957

Fair officials expect the greatest crowd of the week tomorrow, when thousands of children and adults are expected to take part in Cape Girardeau Day at the Arena Park; as a prelude, the fair hosts an outstanding horse show in the evening in front of the grandstand; prize money totaling $610 is awarded in eight classes.

Charles Schabbing, a 4-H member from the Campster Club in Cape Gir­ardeau County, took top honors in the Junior Chicken of Tomorrow Contest, held for the first time this year at the SEMO District Fair.

75 years ago: Sept. 11, 1932

Dedication services for a burial ground for veterans of the World War from Cape Girardeau County are held in the afternoon at Memorial Park Cemetery on Highway 61, under the auspices of the American Legion posts of Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

The Rev. F.H. Milzer, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, is in Stuttgart, Ark., where he speaks at a mission festival; student John L. Herzog conducts the German service in the morning at Trinity, while student Edgar Rubel has charge of the English service.

100 years ago: Sept. 11, 1907

A large crowd attends the Chautauqua in the evening; Alton Packard is on stage, drawing cartoons and telling stories that are simply marvelous; tomorrow will be Fraternal Day, with fraternal societies of the area being welcomed to the Chautauqua tent.

Walker Greer of Charleston, Mo., a competent jeweler, will join the Al Chenue jewelry company of Cape Girardeau about Sept. 20.
