Dr. Walter W. Parker, president of Teachers College, speaks in the morning at Centenary Methodist Church; Dr. Marion N. Waldrip, the church's retiring pastor, is in Lexington, Ky., to speak at the church he will next pastor.
Bishop Edward T. Sheehan, formerly stationed at St. Vincent's College in Cape Girardeau, died of pneumonia Friday in China; he was a native of Streator, Ill., and was ordained at the seminary at Perryville, Mo., in 1916; he served on the faculty of the Cape Girardeau college from 1922 to 1923, going to China in 1923.
100 years ago: Sept. 10, 1908
Classes began yesterday at Cape Girardeau's two largest schools: St. Vincent's College and the Normal School; at the latter, enrollment figures have already eclipsed all former figures; at the close of the first day's work, about 300 students had enrolled for the fall quarter.
Mrs. R. Armstrong, living about 10 miles north of Cape Girardeau on Perryville Road, has the misfortune to lose her house by fire early in the evening; she and one son are at home when the fire starts, but they save only a few things; while the house was built of logs, it was in good condition.
